Vernaccia di San Gimignano stands out among the top wines of Tuscany, being the region's only white wine to have reached the lofty heights of DOCG status. Wines are straw yellow in color with golden reflections that become more accentuated with aging. The wines typically present delicate aromas of pear, apple and lemon, which can evolve into spicy mineral notes as the wine develops. On the palate the wines are dry and savory, sometimes with a characteristic almond aftertaste.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is excellent as an aperitif, paired with crustacean and shellfish appetizers, and also with first courses made of white sauces and mushrooms, rice dishes and pasta salads. It is unparalleled when paired with raw, baked, fried or grilled fish.
